Shopify says the CBD expansion is a good fit for the platform, which is used by many retailers and licensed cannabis producers in Canada to facilitate sales and distribution of their products.
The platform will expand its offerings to include a slew of hemp-derived, CBD-infused products, and has also expanded its marketing tools such as Reliable Payments and Store Design Experience.
Cult skincare brand Josie Maran is one of the first CBD (cannabidiol) cosmetic companies in Shopify’s stable. The U.S. former model’s eponymous label first attained its coveted status with its line of pure argan oil and argan-infused lotions, serums and creams.
The company launched its CBD-infused spinoff, Josie Maran Skin Dope, earlier this year. The collection includes a 50/50 argan/hempseed “Organic Glow Oil,” which the company claims will provide “stronger-looking, bouncier, glowier skin,” and an argan oil infused with 100 mg of CBD, which the brand has, unfortunately, mislabelled as non-psychoactive.
Although topical CBD does not produce psychoactive effects, the cannabinoid itself is, in fact, psychoactive, albeit non-intoxicating—a frequently made error in the waterfall of CBD-infused products currently flooding the market.
“This is an exciting time for the CBD skincare industry,” director of e-commerce for Josie Maran Cosmetics Roger Wason said in a statement. “Consumers are eager to connect with us and try our Skin Dope products. Until recently, we didn’t have a simple solution to manage and sell our CBD Oil and Hemp Seed Oil assortment online. Shopify has helped us focus more on our relationships with our consumers and growing our business,” Wason said.
